In John 3, Jesus has a discourse with a religious leader by the name of Nicodemus about how one might be saved. Through this passage that we see that we not only can not save ourselves, but the gospel transforms us both now and forever. In the later portion of John 3, we see how the gospel transforms John the Baptist as he responds some of his followers leaving him to follow Jesus with the statement, “My joy is complete, Jesus must increase and I must decrease.” In the same way that we can not save ourselves, apart from the gospel we can not stop building our kingdoms and start enjoying God’s kingdom.
